AN IMPORTANT QUESTION: MUST YOU BLOG?

#AUDACITY2LEAD must you blog

If you are to write down your primary reason for blogging, what would it be?

I told myself when I started blogging in 2006 that 6 to 8 months from the time I started, I’ll be making plenty of money off my blog.

One, two, three years later, I wasn’t making a dime. I was vexed! 🙁

Everyone wants to blog because Linda Ikeji is making some money; because Omojuwa is travelling around, and influencing decisions.

The truth is none of these guys opted for money as the only reason they wanted to blog when they began.

Getting clear on why you want to do anything as a leader is important than how you want to get it done.

Knowing ‘why’ keeps you pumped up while doing it, and helps you measure how effective you’re doing what needs to be done.

I have found some reasons why people blog, which I’ll share with you shortly.

But before I go on, let me say thank you for reading my book “47 Common Mistakes Nigerian Bloggers Make.” (In case you haven’t yet, click here to get a copy)

I believe it has sparked a desire for more knowledge in you, which is why I wrote this.

4 Reasons Why You Want to Blog

  1. Marketing: Here your goal is to convert readers into buyers of a product or service you may have or want to promote.
  2. Business development: You already have a business, but you’re not getting traction. Nobody seems to know you exist. Getting on a blogging platform helps you promote your business beyond a locality and helps you showcase your expertise. This may be the reason why you want to blog.
  3. Community building: Nairaland is the largest existing forum in Nigeria right now because it was built primarily for community building. What happens here is a site where you interact with others of the same interest and get real life responses.
  4. Next, I’ll tell you in the paragraphs that follow.

If your reason for blogging is just to make money, or, just to belong (I want to blog), you’ll be frustrated sooner than you might have thought. There is so much more than that.

A bigger reason for wanting to blog (#4 particularly) is: TO HELP PEOPLE. And this is where the money is, really. Here, you are focused on pushing out content, resources and materials that help people get a particular thing done. Here also is where you develop your unique expertise, your unique voice, your individual blogging pattern, etc.

If you help somebody find what they are looking for in life, you will never be stranded when you are looking for yours. Somebody will help you find it. That’s a natural law of life.

My reasons may limit you but I believe you have an idea.

Find your own reason why you blog. And do that early enough as it is what will guarantee your success.

Really, if you are to write down your primary reason for blogging, what would it be? Share your answer with me in the comment box below.

  1. …let me give you a straight answer. I started blogging when I was challenged by my former boss’s blog. I wanted to make impact sort of and say 5 years down the line, my reasons have been refined over time. Now, I feel so fulfilled when I get feedbacks from some of my posts and it sure gladens my heart. So I agree with you, “A bigger reason for wanting to blog (#4 particularly) is: TO HELP PEOPLE.” Thanks for sharing 🙂

  2. Great ideas! Blogging is one of the CHEAPEST ways to PROJECT and PROMOTE your PERSONAL & ORGANISATIONAL brand. And more IMPORTANTLY for me, anybody in any part of the world can read, interact and do business with you.

I REALLY appreciate this work by DAYO SAMUEL.

  3. I started blogging to inspire people and challenge them to pursue their divinely ordained destinies. Feedbacks I have received has been a source of fulfilment. My reason for blogging is to help people mainly youths, leaders on career and personal development.

    1. Dele, I’ll simply encourage you to keep at it. To corroborate what Semako said in the comment too, you have the world to influence. The world is simply your STAGE.

  6. Another great share here bro!

This is a really great question that indeed begs an answer and your thoughtful answer to this question will for sure alter the course of your life.

I’m a believer of the school of thought that says “we are born to blog”.

As much as we are born to blog, we shouldn’t also get it twisted. It seems to me that one in every three families in Nigeria now own a blog. Funny, right?

This folks believe that blogging is easy and a funnel to making huge money. I agree with the second one but the first is a really great misconception and something that’s totally wrong.

Blogging is not easy; it’s very hard! I started blogging in 2011 with the intent of getting the little Knowledge God’s given me to the world.

I jumped in into the bandwagon using the blogspot platform but things were pretty hard as I didn’t understand the technical aspect of blogging at the time.

I quickly changed platform upon platforms until I got to wordpress, which was kinda easy but didn’t go down well with me too as I couldn’t get traffic.

Now, my point is “blogging is hard not easy”.

So speaking about why I blog, I for one blog because I have this great passion to sharing my knowledge with people with the hope of motivating them from the state of inaction to taking action towards achieving greater heights.

This thinking helps my quick growth in the blogosphere but until I changed my mentality to wanting to make money.

I’m done with that though and I’m now blogging with the intention I started with.

So you mentioned Omojuwa, that’s a really great guy. He’s been to my church once – HICC where he spoke about “Social Networks and its importance to Church”.

That dude is just too good. I like Linda too and she’s motivated me in so many ways.

Sir, you are doing a great job down here. Keep it up. I’m so glad I found you and this blog today! 😀
