HOW LEADERSHIP BEGINS IN THE HOME @TherapistJones

#AUDACITY2LEAD ILLUSTATIONS

This is a guest post by Adeh Jones, a UK certified marriage and family therapist (MFT). Today, he shares how Leadership Begins from the Home. Check out his blog.

God is purposeful in all things. Because of the purposeful nature of God’s creation, everything came with a potential.

Seeds have the potential of being trees.

Fire has the potential of being used to cook or to destroy.

A fertilized egg has the potential of becoming a cutie reading this post.

Consequently, every child has a potential of being a leader, just the way God saw a king in a little boy, David.

Deep down the DNA of man is a wired leadership ability yearning for expression.

But all this, depends on two factors, the ‘HOW’ and the ‘HOME’.

The HOW

The ‘HOW’ looks at the necessary conditions needed to pull out those potentials.

Every information is a ‘HOW’ exposed!

There is a ‘how’ to preparing a good meal. There is a ’how’ to being a good husband/wife. There is a ‘HOW to being an effective parent, etc.

No wonder millions are being spent annually in empowering people on the ‘HOWs’ of effective leadership.

The HOME

The ‘HOME’ talks about the environment necessary to sustain the potential.

A seed needs the right environment to grow. An environment can either make or mar the developmental process of a potential.

Imagine planting beans in a clay soil; so is it with leadership, the right environment is key.

Having said this,  let me fast-track to our topic for the day ‘HOW leadership begins in the HOME’.

There are three stickability factors responsible for how leadership begins in the home. They are:

  1. Visual Stickability;
  2. Auditory Stickability; and,
  3.  Experiential Stickability.

For this post, we’ll look at Visual Stickability.

Leadership in the home is not taught, but caught. The home is the foundational platform where leadership abilities are unearthed.

Like a structure, foundation provides stability and the platform for a superstructure.

What this means is, you can never have a good structure without a good foundation, and so is it with leadership.

Parents are responsible for setting the right foundation on which their kids will build upon. Just as P. D. James asserted “What a child doesn’t receive, he can seldom give.”

Whatever it is you do, becomes their template in interpreting reality.

Treat your partner abusively, and they’ll think it’s cool and normal to do that.

You’re programming their minds.

As a parent, your kids are modeling what they see you do. They don’t know any better.

As parents, the values we uphold can either build or thwart their leadership development.

Are you a parent, caregiver or coach, these kids are watching you.

What leadership values are you living by? Hard work? Respect for time? Selfless service? Corruption? Laziness? Injustice?

It’s your responsibility as a parent, caregiver, guardian, or coach to help  them become successful, happy, responsible, independent adults, by first making the home the right environment.

A great nation is a product of great leaders, and great leaders are a product of great homes.
